Air source heat pumps
The standard choice for most homes in Tunbridge Wells. An outdoor unit takes heat from the air and feeds your radiators, underfloor heating and hot water.
Air sourceWarm air delivered straight into the room, and cooling in summer from the same unit. The cheapest way into heat pump heating, and now eligible for a £2,500 grant.

An air to air heat pump takes heat from the outside air and blows it directly into the room as warm air, rather than heating water for radiators. If that sounds like air conditioning, it is: the same equipment, run in reverse. In summer it cools.
The important difference from an air to water system is that air to air does not produce hot water. You keep your existing hot water arrangement, whether that is an immersion, a cylinder or a separate system.
Air to air used to be excluded from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme entirely. It now has its own tier worth £2,500. To qualify, the work must be done by an MCS-certified installer, and your existing gas boiler has to be fully removed or permanently decommissioned. You cannot keep it as a backup.
That last condition rules the grant out for a lot of people, and we would rather say so up front. Many customers install air to air alongside existing heating for a conservatory, loft room or home office, which is a perfectly sensible thing to do but is not grant eligible.
If you want to replace a gas or oil boiler entirely and keep radiators and stored hot water, this is the wrong product and an air to water air source system is what you need. We will tell you that rather than sell you the cheaper job.
Efficiency is comparable to air to water, often slightly better because there is no water loop and no cylinder losses. The catch is that it heats the rooms you put units in, not the whole house, so whole-house coverage means several indoor units and the cost advantage narrows.
Essentially yes. It is the same equipment, and a modern air conditioning system is a heat pump. The difference is one of emphasis: air to air systems are specified and marketed for heating first, cooling second.
Yes, £2,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which was added as a separate tier in 2026. It requires an MCS-certified installation and the full removal or permanent decommissioning of your existing gas boiler. You cannot keep the boiler as backup and still claim.
No. It heats and cools air only. You keep your existing hot water arrangement, which is the main practical difference from an air to water air source system.
Roughly £2,000 to £3,500 for a single room system installed, and £5,000 to £9,000 for a multi-room arrangement. Where the £2,500 grant applies, a single room system can end up costing very little.
Yes, and that is a genuine advantage over every other heat pump type. The same unit that heats the room in January cools it in July.
